Puerto Rico has a long and rich equestrian tradition that dates all the way to Ponce de León and includes one of the most prized horses in the world: the Puerto Rico Paso Fino (“Fine Gait”).

The ancestors of these horses were introduced to the island by the conquistadores in 1509. Bred for saddle riding, they were known for a surprisingly smooth lateral gait and the elegant, almost finicky cadence of their hooves.

These beautiful animals are the pride of Puerto Rico, and schools around the island continue to uphold the centuries-old Paso Fino tradition. Thankfully, this dedication also gives visitors the rare opportunity to experience one of the smoothest rides on Earth. But Paso Finos aren’t the only horses on the island. Take a closer look at the many equestrian experiences you can enjoy in Puerto Rico.

  • El Yunque

A horseback ride in El Yunque is a wonderful way to experience the back-to-the-land beauty of the only subtropical rainforest in the U.S. National Forest Service. And when you take a horseback riding tour with Hacienda Carabalí, you get the added benefit of a brief stop and dip in a deliciously cool river. Eco Action Tours also offers horseback riding excursions from the foothills of the forest to a nearby beach.

    • Horses or Horsepower?

A horseback ride is a gentle adventure, but if you crave a little more horsepower, check out Hacienda Carabalí’s 4-track excursions.

    • Luquillo Beach

At Hacienda 8A, you’ll have lovely views of the south face of the El Yunque peak. A mountain hike and dip beneath a waterfall are just a short ride away!
