“Rio Bayamon” is the first public golf course in the metropolitan area. It is conveniently located in the municipality of Bayamón, 20 minutes from Luis Muñoz Marín International Airport. The whole park project emerges as a municipal environmental initiative for reforestation and erosion control for the river basin. A favorite of President Eisenhower, this was the first public golf course in Puerto Rico. This 6,633-yard course has straight and open fairways with an abundance of sand traps and few trees that make the mild westerly cross winds quite the challenge. Set atop a cliff, this18-hole course offers an extensive view of the point where the frantic Atlantic Ocean meets the serene Caribbean Sea. In season, golfers might even do a little whale watching from the course’s vantage point. This is a very popular golfing spot for tourists and members of the U.S. Coast Guard.
