Puerto Rico is always a sure bet for a good time. But if you’re inclined to try your luck in a more formal setting, you’ll be glad to learn that the island has a solid reputation as a gaming destination. Casinos are peppered throughout the island’s hotels, so you’ll never be too far from one. Here’s a sample of some of the most noteworthy establishments:
Sheraton Puerto Rico Hotel & Casino – The Sheraton’s Casino Metro is one of San Juan’s newest and largest casinos. Featuring more than 400 slot machines, 16 table games and live entertainment at the Mezzanine Stage, it’s hard to resist Lady Luck’s classy allure at the Sheraton.
El San Juan Resort & Casino – If Casino Metro represents the next level of gaming in Puerto Rico, then El San Juan’s elegant facility harkens back to an era of old-world charm and opulence. The 13,000-square-foot casino features blackjack, craps, mini baccarat, roulette and state-of-the-art slot machines.
La Concha Resort – Located in the vibrant district of Condado, La Concha’s Casino del Mar combines high-tech design with chic elegance. The casino blends seamlessly into the hotel’s modern open lobby, providing an inviting atmosphere.
The Ritz-Carlton San Juan – Out of 77 hotels worldwide, this is the only Ritz-Carlton property that has a casino. Traditional games and more than 340 slot machines are available at the elegantly decorated casino, which is open 24 hours.
Wyndham Rio Mar Beach Resort & Spa – The stunning Wyndham Rio Mar is meant to provide an escape from the vibrant San Juan atmosphere, but that doesn’t make it incompatible for gamers. The resort’s Club Bahía casino offers guests 7,000 square-feet of entertainment.
El Conquistador Resort – Located on the far eastern end of the island, El Conquistador has rightfully earned a reputation as a secluded paradise. The resort’s amenities include a 10,000-square-foot casino that caters to experienced gamers and first-timers alike.
Hilton Ponce Golf & Casino Resort – The southern town of Ponce’s best bet for gambling, this casino offers a wide variety of gambling choices in a laid-back atmosphere, including the island’s only full baccarat table and 337 slot machines.
Hipódromo Camarero – Need a break from the casino? How about a day at the races? Hipódromo Camarero, Puerto Rico’s most famous racetrack, holds thoroughbred horse races every Monday, Wednesday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday. Formerly known as El Comandante, the racetrack has been operating since 1957 and is currently located just east of San Juan in the town of Canóvanas. In addition to the on-site betting windows, the complex has an island-wide network of betting agencies, known as Agencias Hípicas.
